- varied from 3 to 36 columns and from 3 to 20 rows. These

- STATUS LINE:
- ┌────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
- │1 25 Words 1:XMASWORD 2:NONE From Complete List C12 R1│
- └────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
-
- The Status Line (the bottom line of the display) provides

- The first number on the Status Line refers to the
- activity number that is displayed. The next number on
- the status line indicates the number of words used in the
- activity.
-
- Following the 1: is the name of the first wordlist. This
- wordlist was selected with the File Menu. This wordlist
- is used with all activities. Following the 2: is the

- with the File Menu. The second wordlist can be removed

- Menu.
-
- Either From Complete List or From Marked Words is

- automatically print. For example, you could
- automatically print 15 different crossword puzzles from

-
- MANIPULATION HINTS:
- Words can be changed back and forth between capital and
- lower case letters. It is easier to work with all
- capital letters. However, sometimes lower case letters
- are necessary. For example, in chemistry, CO means
- Carbon Monoxide and Co means Cobalt. This program treats
- capital letters and lower case letters as two different
- letters. This means that words will not intersect at a
- common letter if one is a capital letter and the other is
- lower case letter.
-
- Placing the longest words into a word list first does not
- guarantee that more total words will be placed into an
- activity.
-
- Each time a word list is randomized, the order of the
- vocabulary words and clues is changed.
-
- Teachers can use different activities to stress the same
- vocabulary words with different formats. The different
- activities allow for the different learning styles of
- students.

- TOTAL COLUMNS, ROWS:
- The size of the crossword puzzles and kriss-cross
- activities may be varied from 3 to 36 columns wide and
- from 3 to 20 rows high. A 15 column by 15 rows grid with
- clues usually fits on the normal size 8 1/2" by 11"
- paper. The maximum number of columns that can be printed
- is determined by the printer pitch. The maximum number
- of columns for a 10 pitch printer setting is 24 columns.
- Other maximums are 12 pitch = 28 columns, and 15 pitch
- and 17 pitch = 36 columns. Puzzles and kriss-cross
- activities are automatically sized before printing.
- Automatic sizing eliminates all outside rows and columns
- that do not contain letters.
-
- CROSSWORD POWER Page 23
-
- STARTING SQUARE:
- The first word in your word list is placed horizontally
- at the starting row and column position before trying to
- find intersecting words. When searching to find the best
- puzzle, the starting square is automatically changed to
- Column 1, Row 1. When the searching is completed, the
- starting square is set to the row and column that created
- the best (most puzzle words) puzzle.
-
- PRINTING THE GENERAL HEADING:
- If YES is chosen a two line heading will be printed. The
- word list topic will be printed on the left side of the
- second line. If NO is chosen, the word list topic will
- be centered at the top of each printed page. The word
- list topic was entered when the word list was created and
- can be revised by the selection on the Edit Menu.
-
- AUTOMATICALLY CAPITALIZE PUZZLE LETTERS:
- For letters to intersect in a puzzle or kriss-cross, they
- must be identical. All letters of the words must be
- either all lower or upper case. To quickly change the
- case of the words, use the manipulate selection on the
- Edit Menu.
-
- SEARCH METHOD TO FIND BEST PUZZLE:
- The Total method examines all possible starting square
- combinations. The Quick method examines about 40
- starting square combinations. The first combination
- places the first word from your word list in the upper
- left corner of the puzzle. Then attempts are made to
- find intersecting words. The program will remember how
- many words were placed in each puzzle. Then the first
- word is moved to a new starting square. The different
- placement will cause different letter and word
- intersections. This results in a different number of
- total words placed in the puzzles.
-
- USE PUZZLE GRID RECTANGLE:
- Selecting YES causes the crossword puzzle to print with
- a rectangular shape. All unused letter squares are
- filled with the draft, checkered, solid or shading
- pattern selected on the printer Settings Menu. If NO
- is selected, most of the unused letter squares are not
- filled in. The only unused letter squares that are
- filled in are ones surround by four used squares.
-
- CROSSWORD POWER Page 24
-
- PUZZLE CLUE ARRANGEMENT:
- Full line printing prints all across clues before
- printing the down clues. If Side by Side is selected,
- across and down clues will be automatically balanced and
- formatted in two columns below each puzzle grid.
-
- ALLOW DUPLICATE WORD ENTRY:
- Setting to NO prevents you from entering the same word
- twice in a word list. For example, you could not enter
- Superior twice as one of the Great Lakes. You could
- still enter Superior, Michigan, Erie, Huron, and Ontario
- as the words, and use the same definition for each of the
- five Great Lakes. Setting to YES allows you to put the
- same word in twice. A word such as lie, can have two
- different meanings.
-
- ACROSS-DOWN LANGUAGE FOR CLUES:
- English, French, Spanish, and German translations of
- ACROSS and DOWN can be printed with the clues.
-
- USE MARKED WORDS ON ACTIVITIES:
- When No is selected, all wordlist words have an equal
- chance of being used on an activity. From Complete List
- will be displayed in the status line. When Yes is
- selected, the Marked words are used to limit which words
- are chosen for an activity. The activity will only
- include the Marked words if Yes is selected. From Marked
- Words will be displayed in the status line. Words are
- Marked with the Mark Words selection of the Edit Menu.
-
- SCREEN COLORS:
- The screen colors may be changed to your personal
- preference, or because the regular colors may be hard to
- see on a lap top computer. Up to 127 color combinations
- may be used. When this selection is made, a chart
- showing the 127 color combinations and their related

-
- The default values for screen colors are listed below.
- The first column is for color monitors. The second
- column is used for monochrome monitors. You may enter

- The mouse cursor is turned back on when appropriate.
- Then press Y for Yes to save these changes.

- Epson FX 850 Series NEC 3550
- HP DeskJet Series Okidata
- HP LaserJet II Panasonic KX P2123
- HP LaserJet III/4 Toshiba P351
-
- The NEC 3550, Okidata, and Toshiba printers only support
- the ASCII draft mode. The other printers support ASCII

- PUZZLE AND CLUE PITCH:
- Select a printer pitch supported by your printer.
- CROSSWORD POWER supports 10, 12, 15, and 17 pitch. Ten
- pitch refers to 10 characters per inch. The larger the
- pitch number, the more characters are printed per inch.
- CROSSWORD POWER automatically sets the point size for the
- LaserJet and DeskJet printers based on the pitch setting.
- Some DeskJet and LaserJet printers require a memory
- cartridge to support 12 pitch printing.
-
- The maximum number of columns that can be printed is
- determined by the printer pitch. The maximum number of
- columns for a 10 pitch printer setting is 24 columns.
- Other maximums are 12 pitch = 28 columns, and 15 pitch
- and 17 pitch = 36 columns. Puzzles are automatically
- sized before printing. Automatic sizing eliminates all
- outside rows and columns that do not contain letters.
-
- CLUE LINES PER INCH:
- Normal spacing is 6 lines per inch. Changing to 8 lines
- per inch may prevent the activity from printing on more
- than one page.
-
- CROSSWORD POWER Page 27
-
- INCREASE LEFT/RIGHT MARGINS:
- Normally a one inch margin is left on both the left and
- right sides of the page. A number from 0 to 5 can be
- entered. This number represents how many tenths of an
- inch to increase the margins. Zero keeps the one inch
- margins, a 5 increase both margins by 5/10 of an inch.
- Sometimes it is necessary to increase the margins so an
- activity will print one sheet.
-
- SET PRINTER TO LETTER QUALITY (BOLD):
- Depending on the printer, the activities may be printed
- in either draft or letter quality mode. Draft mode will
- be used if either this setting is set to NO or font
- number 9 (draft) is chosen for the Epson LQ or IBM
- Proprinter X24E printers.
-
- IGNORE PRINTER STATUS <Yes or No>:
- CROSSWORD POWER checks the status of the parallel printer
- port before sending any data. This normally works quite
- well. However, if you have a non-standard, or very fast
- computer, you may experience problems. CROSSWORD POWER
- might actually think that your printer port (LPT1:) is
- busy when you know it is not. If you have printer
- problems like this, select Y for Yes to ignore the
- printer status.
-
- LPT PRINTER PORT:
- This Number indicates where the selected printer is
- connected to your computer. Most printers are connected
- to port (LPT1:). If you have additional parallel printer
- ports, you may use printer port 2 or 3.
-
- USE WISCO.TMP AS DEFAULT FILENAME:
- WISCO.TMP can be used as a common filename. A common
- filename conserves disk space, and allows setting up
- icons to send a common filename to different printers.
- If you decide not to use a common filename, the first
- part of the filename uses the same name as the word list.
- The extension is added to indicate if the file is a
- teacher or student version and a crossword puzzle of
- kriss-cross activity.
-
- CROSSWORD POWER Page 28
-
- PRINT EXTRA SPACE:
- This setting allows an extra space between the crossword
- puzzle and clues and the kriss-cross and word listing.
-
- FILL METHOD <A>SCII, <C>HECKERED, OR <S>OLID
- The unused letter squares of the rectangular grid can be
- filled with a checkered or solid pattern or plain
- characters (ASCII draft). The Toshiba, NEC and Okidata
- printers only use the ASCII draft mode. The LaserJet
- II/III/4 uses different shading methods to achieve the
- checker pattern. To create solid squares on the LaserJet
- II/III/4 set the shading to 100%
-
- ASCII FILL CHARACTER NUMBER (32 to 254):
- This number represents the ASCII character to fill the
- unused letter squares of the puzzle. For example, the
- ASCII 035 # results in the number sign. ASCII 219 ███
- results in a solid black square. A checker pattern
- results from choosing ASCII 176 ░░░ (lightest pattern),
- ASCII 177 ▒▒▒ (medium pattern) or 178 ▓▓▓ (darkest
- pattern). Consult your DOS manual for other ASCII
- numbers and characters.
-
- HP LASERJET II/DESKJET PUZZLE SQUARE SIZE:
- The squares in the puzzles can be either square or full
- (taller) size. Full size allows easier fill ins while
- square size looks more professional.
-
- SHADING PERCENT FOR UNUSED LETTER SQUARES:
- The unused puzzle letter squares are filled with one of
- eight shading patterns allowed by the printer. The
- closer the percentage is to 100, the more the box is
- shaded (100% means the box is solid black). The
- following eight shading patterns are allowed by the HP-
- LaserJet III printer:
- 1-2% 3-10% 11-20% 21-35%
- 36-55% 56-80% 81-99% 100%
-
- The intensity of the checkered fill with the LaserJet II
- printer is also determined by the shading pattern.
-
- CROSSWORD POWER Page 29
-
- HP-DEFINED CROSS-HATCHED PATTERN NUMBER:
- The unused puzzle letter squares are filled with one of
- six cross-hatched patterns allowed by the HP-LaserJet III
- printer.
- 1. horizontal lines 4. back slashes
- 2. vertical lines 5. small squares
- 3. forward slashes 6. small diamonds
-
- HP LASERJET TYPEFACE NUMBER:
- Typeface refers to the unique design of the characters.
- These typefaces were included with the LaserJet III:
- 0=LinePrinter and 3=Courier are fixed pitch. 5=CG Times
- and 52=Univers are scalable proportional fonts.
-
- Internal fonts are fonts built into the printers. Most
- DeskJets and all LaserJets before the LaserJet III had

- lineprinter internal fonts. This was also true of almost
- all LaserJet compatibles until quite recently. The

- can be used with LaserJet III/4 printers. The scalable
- point size will be determined by the pitch selected to
- print the activity. Courier 12 and 15 pitch soft fonts
- are included with CROSSWORD POWER and are transferred
- (downloaded) prior to printing the activities.

- WORKING WITH VOCABULARY POWER:
- Word lists created with CROSSWORD POWER are 100%
- compatible with VOCABULARY POWER from WISCO Computing.
- VOCABULARY POWER creates vocabulary bingo cards,
- cryptolists, fill-in-the-blank, matching, and multiple
- choice quizzes, flash cards, magic number squares, word
- searches, and juggle letter activities from your word
- lists. Words and clues are automatically arranged before
- print outs are made.
-
- It is recommended that CROSSWORD POWER and VOCABULARY
- POWER be placed in the same subdirectory of the hard
- disk. This allows both programs to use the same settings
- (WISCOSET.CNF) and allows easier access of the word lists
- for both programs.
